You do not need a perfectly curated nursery. You need three things. That's it. Let's go.
Thing 1: Make It Dark
Like, really dark. Hold-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face dark. Babies are not afraid of the dark — that comes later. Right now, darkness tells their brain it is time to sleep. Blackout curtains are the single highest-ROI purchase you will make as a sleep-deprived parent. Bonus: they work on YOU too.
Thing 2: Add White Noise
Your baby spent 9 months listening to the inside of a human body — it was loud in there. Silence is actually strange to them. A consistent white noise machine (not a playlist that stops after 30 minutes) masks household sounds, helps babies stay asleep through transitions between sleep cycles, and signals that sleep time is happening.
Thing 3: Cool the Room Down
The sweet spot for baby sleep is 68–72°F (20–22°C). Babies sleep better when they are slightly cool — not cold, just not warm. Overheating is also a safe sleep concern, so when in doubt, go cooler and add a light sleep sack instead of cranking the heat.
That's the whole list.
Dark. Noisy. Cool. You do not need a sound machine that plays whale songs or a $400 bassinet that rocks itself. You need these three things working together, every sleep, every time. Consistency is the magic ingredient — not the gear.
